Abstract

We are living in the middle of a Fourth Industrial Revolution, with new technology leading to dramatic shifts in everything from manufacturing to supply chain logistics. In a lively, developing field of academic, procurement is often neglected. Despite this, procurement plays a vital role, connecting the organization with its ecosystem. At a time of change and economic crisis, a new business model is called for, which this book aims to define. Based on the applications of Industry 4.0 concepts to procurement, this book describes Procurement 4.0 as a method and a set of tools, helping businesses to improve the value of their products, reduce waste, become more flexible, and address the business needs of the future. It will appeal to academics in the area, as well as practitioners. .

Abstract

"What can political theory teach us about architecture, and what can it learn from paying closer attention to architecture? The essays assembled in this volume begin from a common postulate: that architecture is not merely a backdrop to political life but a political force in its own right. Each in their own way, they aim to give countenance to that claim, and to show how our thinking about politics can be enriched by reflecting on the built environment. The collection advances four lines of inquiry, probing the connection between architecture and political regimes; examining how architecture can be constitutive of the ethical and political realm; uncovering how architecture is enmeshed in logics of governmentality and in the political economy of the city; and asking to what extent we can think of architecture-tributary as it is to the flows of capital-as a partially autonomous social force. Taken together, the essays demonstrate the salience of a range of political theoretical approaches for the analysis of architecture, and show that architecture deserves a place as an object of study in political theory, alongside institutions, laws, norms, practices, imaginaries, and discourses."--

Abstract

Ethnoprimatology is situated at the intersection between the biological and cultural subfields of anthropology. Research on the interface between human and nonhuman primates has been steadily increasing since 1997, when the term ethnoprimatology was first coined. Although there have been studies on human–nonhuman primate interactions in the tropical Americas, no single comprehensive volume has been published that integrates this information to fully understand it in this region. Eighteen novel chapters written by outstanding scholars with various backgrounds are included in this edited volume. They refer to the complex interconnections between different indigenous peoples with New World monkeys that sympatrically share their ancestral territories. Geographically, the range covers all of the Neotropics, from southern Mexico through northern Argentina. This work includes topics such as primates as prey and food, ethnozoology/ethnoecology, cosmology, narratives about monkeys, uses of primates, monkeys as pets, and ethnoclassification. Multiple views as well as diverse theoretical and methodological approaches are found within the pages. In sum, this is a compendium of ethnoprimatological research that will be prized by anthropologists, ethnobiologists, primatologists, conservationists, and zoologists alike. “This book… provides a historical benchmark for all subsequent research in ethnoprimatology in the Neotropics and beyond.” — Leslie E. Sponsel, University of Hawai´i at Mānoa.

Abstract

Light is not an inert physical entity. Omnipresent in Nature, it exerts an essential action on living beings, from the smallest to the most complex, including the humans. All living beings depend on the light for their development and life conservation. According to the spectral composition, the effects of light can be beneficial or harmful. Light regulates confined or systemic biological processes and may be used as a therapeutic tool. Light pollution may cause harmful effects in plants and animals, disturbing the stability of ecosystems. All these aspects are treated in Light, Life and Health, in a scientific, historical and sociocultural approach. Within international context, the work that Portuguese produced to study and disseminate those subjects is exposed and a reference is made to the way the phototherapies have been disseminated and established in Portugal.

Abstract

Abstract

"Most of the economically-important traits in crops are quantitative and are controlled by many genes. Breeding for Quantitative Traits in Plants investigates the application of quantitative genetics to plant breeding. This book is an ideal text for a graduate-level course and a useful reference for practicing plant breeders"--
